State/County Elections (even numbered years)
Primary Elections: (2nd Tuesday in June before general election)
Nevada is a closed primary state, (i.e., you can only vote for offices associated with your party affiliation, along with nonpartisan offices and ballot questions that are applicable to your precinct). Go to “Elected Officials in Douglas County, Nevada” to see partisan and nonpartisan offices and their terms of office.
Major Political Parties
Currently Nevada recognizes two major political parties for state/county primary elections: If you register as a member of a major political party, you will only be eligible to vote for offices associated with your party, along with nonpartisan offices and questions that are applicable to your precinct, in state/county primary elections. The major political parties are:
- Democratic
- Republican
Minor Political Parties
Currently Nevada recognizes two minor political parties for state/county primary elections:
- Independent American
- Libertarian
- You can also choose to be Non-Partisan and not be affiliated with either a major or minor political party.
If you register as a member of a minor political party or as a nonpartisan (no party affiliation), you will only be eligible to vote for nonpartisan offices and questions that are applicable to your precinct, (i.e., you can not vote for partisan offices, in state/county primary elections).
General Elections: (1st Tuesday after first Monday)
General elections are open. You can vote for all offices on your ballot, regardless of your party affiliation. You can also vote for questions that are applicable to your precinct.
